The venue

The Embassy of Italy stands at Hiroshimastraße 1 in Berlin's Tiergarten diplomatic quarter, a short walk from the Kulturforum and the southern edge of the Tiergarten park. The building is one of the large embassy structures of the 1930s diplomatic district, restored after German reunification and returned to use as the Italian mission to Germany.

Offsite Arts presents its first exhibition here in partnership with the Embassy. The choice of site is part of the exhibition: an Italian Baroque painting and a new contemporary sculpture are shown inside an Italian institution in Berlin, in working rooms rather than in a museum gallery.

The Embassy's palazzo is opened to the exhibition by H.E. Fabrizio Bucci, Ambassador of Italy to Germany. Presenting an Italian Baroque painting in the Italian mission in Berlin places the work inside the institution of the country it comes from, rather than in a neutral gallery.

Visiting the exhibition

  • Identification: valid photo identification is required at the entrance, as the exhibition takes place inside a diplomatic mission

Getting there

The quarter is served by the Tiergarten and Potsdamer Platz transport hubs and is walkable from the Kulturforum museums. Note that the Embassy is a working diplomatic building: please arrive within your booked slot rather than early, and follow the instructions of the staff carrying out access control.

The exhibition

On view: Caravaggio × Berlinde De Bruyckere — Caravaggio's Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy (c. 1606), shown publicly in Germany for the first time, with a newly commissioned work by Berlinde De Bruyckere.
